In France, the engineering degree is a 5 year “diplôme d’ingénieur – master’s degree”, accredited by national authority "Commission des titres d'ingénieur" (CTI).

Graduates are habilitated to work as an engineer without any further requirement. There is no intermediate degree (bachelor) in France to become a chartered engineer.

 The first two years in higher education normally take place at specialized institutions, the so-called “classes préparatoires aux Grandes Ecoles”. Only the best students, with high marks in scientific subjects at the secondary education final exam “baccalauréat” are admitted to “classes préparatoires”. The syllabus of this two year course is focused on further science (mathematics, physics, chemistry, general engineering science).

 Admission to a “Grande Ecole d’Ingénieurs” is determined by a highly selective entrance examination that is organized nationwide. Each year, about 8.000 applicants take the entrance examination to the ESTP that offers 560 places. The actual engineering course at the “Grande Ecole d’Ingénieurs” lasts 3 years.

 The goal of French engineering education is to provide:

  •  a high level general scientific knowledge that enables the engineer during his whole professional life to evolve and to adapt to new techniques;
  • a specialised education that will allow him to possess technical skills and to be operational as soon as he graduates;
  • a thorough general education that will prepare the future engineer to become a manager in the international market;
  • an introduction to applied research and innovation activities in order to train creative, innovative and open-minded professionals.

The ESTP engineering degree programme is accredited by CTI and RICS and benefits from the European quality label in engineering, EUR-ACE.

The ESTP has also established a partnership with the French branch of the Institution of Civil Engineers. The ICE federates 80 000 members worldwide; its main missions are:

- Being a qualifying body - providing an internationally recognised civil engineering qualification
- Being a centre of excellence for civil engineering knowledge
- Promoting the civil engineering profession by ensuring that everyone understands the positive impact that civil engineers have on society
