Our Scientific Themes and Research Axes

The ESTP Construction Research Institute structures its work around scientific themes linked to the ongoing transitions in the construction sector and society. Led by dedicated teams, these themes rely on state-of-the-art technological platforms and are enriched through publications and forward-looking analyses.

Mobilising Research to Transform the Sector

The ESTP research unit is organised into 8 complementary teams, grounded in field realities and the sector’s transformation needs. Each team works to advance knowledge, develop practical solutions, and feed the school’s educational programs.

  • Materials for Sustainable Construction: recycling, circular economy, environmental impact reduction.
  • Multiphysics and Multi-scale Studies of Construction Systems: soil/structure interactions, geo-materials, climate change effects.
  • Digital Systems and Geoinformatics: 3D modelling, digital twins, georeferencing of infrastructure.
  • Electrical Systems and Energy Transition in Construction: energy efficiency, integration of renewable energy, smart buildings.
  • Architecture & Construction Project Management: organisation, project supervision, quality and performance.
  • Smart Construction Site (Troyes): robotics, sensors, real-time monitoring, safety.
  • Smart Construction Site (Orléans)
  • Smart, Sustainable and Resilient Cities (Dijon): systems analysis, urban infrastructure, adaptation to global change.

Relying on Cutting-Edge Technological Platforms for Innovation and Education

ESTP leverages teaching and research platforms across Cachan, Dijon, Orléans, and Troyes. These high-tech spaces serve as innovation catalysts, supporting both pedagogy and applied research, driving the sustainable transformation of the construction sector.

Providing Advanced Tools for Experimentation

Designed for both educational and scientific purposes, these platforms allow students from all programs, PhD candidates, and faculty to work on real-world challenges. They are equipped with advanced instruments for: material characterisation, numerical simulation, 3D modelling, geolocation, experimental measurement, and performance analysis of systems or prototypes at multiple scales.

Some of the most notable facilities include:

  • Smart Grids: smart grid test bench
  • Energy Efficiency: bi-climatic chamber, KFB 720 constant condition climate chamber, FLIR E54 thermal cameras, IKAM200, external gantry 1
  • Geomechanics: hydro-sedimentary channel, EFA erodimeter
  • Material Carbonation: carbonation reactor
  • Concrete: clinker kiln, 3D printer…
  • Bituminous Materials: rotational rheometer, infrared spectrometer and microscope, complex/fatigue module press for asphalt, gyratory shear press, accelerated aging chamber CRT-PAV1…
  • Material Measurement Equipment: LS130 particle sizing, thermogravimetric analysis and DSC, X-ray diffraction (XRD), DVS Dynamic Vapor Sorption…

Growing Research: A Shared Commitment and Ambition

Supported by the ESTP Foundation, the strategy for equipping and developing these platforms benefits from an investment plan of over €10 million, dedicated to technological innovation, funding of real-world demonstrators, and research support.

Open to academic and industrial collaboration, these technological platforms are integrated into territorial and international dynamics, in partnership with major public and private actors in the sector. They embody ESTP’s commitment to applied, useful research focused on ecological, digital, and societal transitions.
