Digital twins of construction and infrastructure in their environment Chair

A strategic project (2021–2025) supporting the digital transformation and decarbonisation of the construction sector.

The Chair in Digital twins for construction and infrastructure within their environment represents a unique academic and industrial alliance in Europe, built on a holistic approach to digital twins applied to buildings, infrastructure and territories.

A Research Chair Supporting Sector Transformation

Exploring new solutions to reinvent the act of building and positioning digital transformation as a driver of performance and environmental impact: this is the ambition of the Chair.

Its objectives are to:

  • Promote a shared vision of digital twins, from knowledge to concrete applications;

  • Accelerate the digitalisation of the sector;

  • Develop a leading scientific and technological platform;

  • Support the ecological and energy transition of infrastructure.

The 6 Main Research Areas

  1. Structuring data used by and generated from the digital twin throughout the asset life cycle;
  2. Digital continuity and interoperability of models and datasets;
  3. Digital twin architecture: linking the physical asset and its digital counterpart;
  4. Coupling Artificial Intelligence and simulation for decision support;
  5. Contribution of digital twins to ecological and energy transition;
  6. Data governance: protection, cybersecurity and digital sovereignty

Three Strategic Pillars

Structuring Digital Continuity for Infrastructure

The Chair develops a holistic vision of the digital twin covering the entire life cycle of assets: design, construction and operation.

Research focuses on:

  • Data structuring and interoperability;

  • Architecture linking the physical asset to its digital twin;

  • Digital continuity of models and datasets.

Objective: ensure data consistency and value creation to support sustainable and resilient infrastructure.

Innovating through Collaborative and Doctoral Research

As a four-year strategic project, the Chair coordinates and funds collaborative research programmes and several doctoral theses in partnership with leading academic and industrial stakeholders.

Research areas include:

  • Artificial intelligence and simulation for decision-making;

  • Automated alert management for networks;

  • Multi-physics and multi-scale modelling;

  • Applications to buildings, infrastructure and territories.

This structured scientific approach addresses critical technological barriers in the sector.

Accelerating Ecological Transition and Performance

Digital twins represent a strategic lever to support both digital and environmental transformation.

The Chair contributes to:

  • Energy optimisation of assets;

  • Improved management of industrial and natural risks;

  • Data security and governance (cybersecurity);

  • Decarbonisation and territorial resilience.

Purpose and Strategic Orientation

The Chair in Digital Twins for Construction and Infrastructure within Their Environment aims to:

  • Promote, from knowledge to practical applications, a holistic and shared vision of digital twins that fosters both industrial and scientific collaboration;

  • Accelerate sector digitalisation to overcome critical technological barriers and deliver optimisation solutions for more sustainable and resilient infrastructure;

  • Fund innovation and research programmes with strong international impact.

Founding Partners

Chair partners are involved in three governance bodies:

  • A Strategic Committee defining the Chair’s major orientations;

  • A Scientific Committee establishing the medium-term scientific roadmap;

  • An Operational Committee supporting implementation.

Partners : Egis, Bouygues Construction, Schneider Electric, le BRGM, SNCF Réseau et Arts et Métiers

Team

The Digital Twins Chair offers a dynamic research environment in close collaboration with leading academic and industrial experts.

It plans to recruit several doctoral candidates working on complementary research topics to address the scientific and technical challenges associated with digital twins applied to construction and infrastructure.
